iPhone 3G/3GS #3 Connector Repair!

So maybe a year ago, I had a friend that needed his iPhone's screen replaced. Well, in doing so, I had damaged one of the key components on his phone. A while later, after replacing it, I had an iPhone with a connector that basically looked like this:

Naturally, I thought, this phone is fucked. Anyway, fast forward to a few weeks later... I had found a source for this connector piece, and it was cheap enough to order, so I thought, "What do I have to lose?"

Well, the piece came, and I brought everything into my work, and this is where it all began. So here is the basic run down of how I do the repair. After disassembling the phone with the tools below, I start removing the remaining pieces of the old connector with some fine point tweezers.

Thereafter, I remove each and every pin that remains soldered to the board CAREFULLY without lifting any solder pads (this is a big mistake many inexperienced repair guys do). Once the pins are free and the solder pads are clean, the area is cleaned up with some 99% Isopropyl Alcohol.

The procedure to solder the new connector on takes some fine articulation, steady hands, and a VERY fine tip soldering iron. If there is anyone out there that wants to do this themselves, please be aware that my iron tip is .008" in size, the smallest you'd ever find anywhere. You cannot buy this at RadioShack haha! It helps that I have all these cool tools at work. So once I position the new connector, it is all done by reflowing the existing solder and adding solder in places necessary to prevent melting the new connector.

If you take a look at the before and after pictures of a customer's phone I've done you will see that I barely used any new solder to secure the connector. Also, for those DIY guys and gals, please note that I am doing all this under a stereozoom microscope with a 5x zoom, it absolutely cannot be done with the naked eye, magnifying glass, or anything other than the microscope!

Even the soldering station I use is a special type, that allows temperature control, radio station buttons for different temperatures, and the tiny chisel tip that is almost like a needle point.

So here are the results of the hard work! These are before and after pictures of a customer's phone. He had sent me the phone in the condition the first pic shows, and after I had cleaned it up and performed the repair, I took the second. Both were taken with a powerful Nikon inspection microscope.

  2. Hector, you're the man!

Thank you so much for fixing the sensor proxy connector and the # 3 cable on my iPhone.

After I broke the connector on my iPhone I panicked and thought I could super glue the # 3 cable to the connector. I know, I know silly me!! Then I started googling to find out how to fix my mistake. I found Hector's web-site and figured.... what do I have to lose, a broken iPhone... so I sent Hector an email, and the rest took care of itself. Hector was great about staying in contact via email every step of the way. He made the repair very quickly and got my phone back to me :)

Hector, thank you again and I wish you continued success!!

  3. Hector,

Agree with both of the above posts! I had a broken junctor and sent the phone off for a repair, had it back within a week working again! This was after Apple said the only option was a replacement for $199 (3G - 8 GB iphone).

    This guy was a lifesaver.

  4. Hector aka 'The Man.'

After breaking my #3 Connector, I had basically written off my iPhone. While doing research (I probably should have done to start out with..) stumbled across this guy offering to fix what is physically (and technologically) beyond my abilities- perform an itty bitty surface mounted ribbon connector replacement.

All I can say is Hector was awesome. Very responsive on email. Walked me through the shipment. Cheap fix (getting this fixed post-warranty violation would be min $250 here). Willingness to ship to the great white north (I'm in Canada) and /extremely/ quick turn around (Fixed it the day he got it, and had it back in the mail the next day. You can't find that service anywhere.)

Knowing what I know about the internet, I literally did not expect to have this returned after sending it all the way down south, but here it is, in my hands, in perfect working order.

You are a gentleman and a scholar. Come into my stable and take my finest horse!

Absolutely awesome life-saver. Thanks for everything.

  7. Hector did a fantastic job fixing my #3 connector on my iPhone. His communication was incredibly prompt, and he answered all of my questions no matter how trivial. My phone came back in perfect working order, and in less than a week there and back. I am completely satisfied with his service! Hector, I can't thank you enough!

  8. Thank you again Hector for fixing my #3 ribbon connector. I thought I could repair my lcd screen by myself and tore the connector. Thankfully I did some reasearch and found him. I dropped it off for the weekend and it was done on sunday night, also gave me a loaner phone to use. Really nice guy, fast work, great pricing. Next time I wont even try to fix it myself, just better to let Hector do his thing.

  9. My son broke the FPC #3 connector while replacing the glass on his iPhone 3g recently. We could not find anyone locally that could replace such a tiny chip on the circuit board. We sent the iPhone to Hector and he turned it around in one day. He kept us informed via email every step of the way (received phone, finished repair, return tracking number).

Hector I thank you for providing a top quality and professional service. My son is thrilled he has his iPhone back just before starting college this fall.

  13. Hector, my GF threw my 16GB phone out of a car window running at 60MPH. I pick up my phone and do some repairs. I bought a LCD and Digitizer and a red back-housing on ebay. Phone works like a charm. Here comes my screw up. This morning I was trying to fix the vibrator and silly me, I forgot to turn off the my iphone and when I completed installing the Vibrator, I notice the LCD back light is dim. I can barely see anything unless I place the sun during sunlight. Anyway I can send the phone to you for you to fix it? Thanks.

  15. Ok, so like me you stumbled across Hector's page in your search on how to fix your now useless but still expensive iphone, and probably like me you are wondering do i take the chance to ship this thing half way across the country to somebody i've never meet, well i took a chance and now im very glad i did.

Hector did a great job fixing my water damaged phone which entails replacing the lcd back light coil, communicated clearly what needs to be done and the turn around time on the repairs, as a matter of fact had the phone done and shipped the same day he received it.

Hector I can't thank you enough, you did an awesome job, im very happy with the repairs that you did and as i told you before, i'll be sure to spread the word.

  17. Mangled my #3 socket when removing my busted screen assembly. Sent it to Hector after looking around for someone to fix it and trying to have someone fix it at work (failure). Hector had it fixed in no time and it was back in the mail the same day. Everything is working again! I don't know of anyone else that does this repair and, even if there is someone else, I don't think they would do as quickly and at such a reasonable price. Thanks!

  18. Having successfully navigated the innards of my Core2Duo iMac for a hard drive replacement, I felt that I would be up to the task of replacing the screen/digitizer on my iPhone 3G when a portion of the screen went dead. When I opened my Apple-refurb iPhone, I noticed that the #3 connector was broken off diagonally and the cable was slighly crooked in the socket. Trying to lift the little black lever and extract the cable made things even worse, essentially destroying the entire connector on the motherboard. I found Hector via this blog, emailed him, and sent him my phone + the screen/digitizer combo for installation. He completed the repair hours withing receiving my phone and I received USPS shipping notification the SAME DAY. His price was, in my estimation, EXTREMELY reasonable given the specialized skill and equipment needed for the repair -- less than Apple would have charged for a screen replacement, and far less than the phone replacement charge that would have been necessary in my case. I can honestly say that I've NEVER, in my 40 years on this Earth, had such friendly, fast, effective and reasonably priced repair service on ANYTHING. The phone works perfectly and, as my daughter was slated to receive it as a hand-me-down for Christmas after my iPhone 4 upgrade, Hector is our Christmas angel! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

  19. Hector,

I'm delighted to be one more person who thanks you for the work you did here...you are a miracle worker! He fixed the phone on the same day he received it, and sent it back to me the very same day! You'd expect this kind of service could cost you a ton, but he doesn't. He does it at a very reasonable price...I was simply impressed by everything he got to offer, and I was very very lucky to have found him.

Trust! You are in good hands here :)

    Can't thank you enough, Hector!

  25. Hector is the guy to use if you need connector 3 replaced on your IPhone. I sent him my wife's phone from the East Coast, which he received on a Saturday. I expected him to fix it on Monday and mail it back on Tuesday. But much to my surprise he had it fixed and back in the mail on Saturday. WOW!!! We received the phone back in perfect working order. He's excellent at responding to emails too. He answered all of my questions almost immediately. I'll admit that I was skeptical at first about sending the phone across the country to someone I knew nothing about. But after reading this blog, seeing comments on other message boards, and seeing reviews on ebay for his service, I decided to take a chance. I'm glad I did. You can trust this guy to take care of your phone. My wife is VERY HAPPY now!!! THANKS HECTOR!!!

  28. What can I say...

Just got my phone back after a connector #3 repair. Looking at the logic board you would not know that the connector has been replaced, it looks brand new and works perfectly!

The service he offers is nothing short of first class. Friendly emails from Hector with a genuine willingness to help and offer advice rather than score a sale set my mind at ease when sending my phone 5000 miles across the Atlantic.

He fixed the phone on the day he received it and the price was very reasonable for such a delicate and involved repair.

Let's hope my iphone has no more problems but if it does, I know where I'll be sending it!

    Thanks so much Hector,

    Richard.

  31. I've just got back my 3gs after having it repaired by hector. What can I say? The guy is a legend.
He cleaned up my number 3 connector and resoldered some burnt out pins to restore power to the backlight, aswell as cleaning out some gunk that had become lodged between the screen and the lcd panel when the phone became wet. All this for a VERY reasonable rate (fraction of the cost of an Apple repair- if they would even offer it in this instance). Do not hesitate if you have an iphone that isn't quite right- throw in the post to Hector! Thank you again!

  36. Man, am I ever glad I found Hector!!! I have a nice iPhone 3G but had one problem, the ear speaker would not work. Lots of research for me but I found a fix or so I thought, I ordered the part, tried it out... BUMMER no go. I then by accident found Hectors Blog. I had called Milliamp and they are great but wouldn't mess with this problem. I got in touch with Hector and he was so easy to deal with and I knew exactly what I would need to pay. I thought it over, got back with him and sent my iPhone. It could have disappeared but NO in a 6 day turn around from GA to CA I had a fully functional iPhone! I hate to mention the cost as it was so reasonable I want to hide it in case Hector has to raise the price ha. He even payed return shipping with delivery Confirmation. I feel very appreciative for a service I couldn't find anywhere else and was not about to pay Apple prices. Thanks a million Hector!!!! leslie

  44. I bought a used iphone and lots of stuff did not work. I was searching the web for fixes and found Hector's blog. Then I saw all the positive comments.

I am all the way in The Bahamas and I was skeptical about sending my phone to the U.S. After contacting Hector, he soothed my worries and told me he could fix my issues for a good price.

About one month later (the mailing process back to The Bahamas was painstakingly long), my phone can now VIBRATE, the Power button works again, the ear speaker works & the proximity sensor works. He even tightened up the silence/vibrate button and the phone cover is now closed tighter.

Thanks Hector. You are great at what you do and you know how to put your customer's mind at ease. Keep it up!

  48. Hector is the man when it comes to soldering broken components on iPhones. I have had him fix my #3 connector on a 3G and recently he also fixed a 5G iPod battery connector that died. I will continue to send all of my devices that need micro-soldering to him.

  49. As a DIY'er, I know my limitations. But where my limitations begin, that is where Hector takes over.
I had two Iphone 3G s with issues; 1 with backlight issue and the second would not power on, even after replacing the battery and charge port. I had all but written them off, but held on to them in the off chance I could find a DIY solution I could handle or a reasonable repair shop to do the work.
After coming across Hector's blog during a random internet surfing-slow afternoon at work, I contacted him through email, just to check on pricing. His contact was professional and prompt, and prices were plenty reasonable. So I decided to take a chance on him completing the repairs for me. The rest is just as so many have commented above; fast turn around on the repair, great communication, and the end result is two Iphone 3G s phones working like new. I have no qualms whatsoever of sending further repairs his way, I am more than confident that the result would be the same.
Simply brilliant, and an honest, upstanding businessman. It has been a pleasure to do business with him!

  53. Hey Hector - just a quick note to say thanks for fixing my iPhone 3GS. I must admit I was a bit sceptical about sending my logic board half way around the world (I live in New Zealand) to someone I'd never heard of before, but based on the comments on your blog I figured I was in safe hands. The #3 connector repair you did, along with the #7 aerial connector were top-notch and the phone is now in my wife's hands with a new screen & back looking (and working!) just like a bought one. For anyone out there considering whether it's a good idea or not to send it to Hector - go for it. The time taken along with the price charged was amazing - it saved me at least NZD$350 on a replacement logic board. Cheers, Ben

  54. Easiest, most professional, and worthwhile repair job I have ever paid for.

I just thought I should mention that Hector really knows his stuff.

The time in transit took longer than the repair itself. Hector repaired my number 3 connector, and hence my earspeaker on my 3GS, in under 40 minutes (yes I was worried enough that I kept checking the emails that often).

A repair shop tried to convince me that the damage was water-related, and my friend runs the place.

I spoke to Hector about it and he assured me that he could get the job done faster, easier, and for much less.

If I didn't live in Canada, I don't think I'd ever have to find another iPhone technician. I think you're probably dealing with one of the best out there.

(Phone just arrived today Hector, in case you're reading this...lol)
